FAQS

Why should I take a kiteboarding lesson?

Even though kiteboarding lessons may seem expensive, there are many reasons why everyone should take a lesson. The most important reason is keeping yourself and others around you from becoming injured. Not only do you risk injuring yourself, you risk damaging a brand new kite.

What should I bring to a lesson?

The only thing you need to bring with is your willingness to learn an exciting new sport. Other than that, a couple of other things you might want are a swimsuit, rash guard or t-shirt, sunscreen, water and inexpensive sunglasses.

Do I need to have strong arms to kite board?

No. Being in good shape will help but people of all shapes and sizes can enjoy the thrill of kiteboarding. However, being able to swim and being comfortable in the water is mandatory.

Where are the lessons taught?

I provide transportation out to a nearby shoal by my personal 22 ft Flat bottom Skiff.

How long are the lessons?

Lessons are usually 2 - 2.5 hours long depending on the student. Lesson time begins when we arrive on the shoal.

Do I need gear for my first lesson?

No. I will provide the gear for your lessons. When you are ready to purchase gear I can guide you in your purchase for kite equipment sizes and brands.

Can I ride along after I have gear and ready for more time on the water?

Yes, I do offer day trip packages, where I make sure you are hooking up right, help with launching and landing of kite and assisting if needed with any issues that may arise

Salter's Kiteboarding on the Crystal Coast

Private Kiteboarding Lesson Center

Kiteboarding is a way to build skills, coordination and a sense of well being while enjoying the importance of our natural resources (Wind, Water, Land). Salter's Kiteboarding is about educating individuals with a safe learning kiteboarding experience. Our students GROW, KITE, FLY!

Kiteboarding is one of the fastest growing new water sports. This sport is the infusion of snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing.

The amount of things you can do with a kite is endless; the fascinating combination realizes our eternal dream of flying. Kiteboarding allows us the freedom to propel like pilots across the water on kite boards.

Kitesurfing has many attractive benefits to offer. It improves balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. It helps build confidence and self esteem. Kiteboarding gear is very portable and affordable.

As with any extreme sport and physically demanding sport, we always recommend seeking professional lessons by certified instructors.

We offer many different lessons customized to each student one-on-one or 2-1 and group kite tours. Each lesson is customized to the students level whether you are learning to fly your first trainer kite or desiring to nail that first jump. We offer a very primitive area for your lesson with shallow water and plenty of room to "fly" on Carrot Island or Sand Dollar Shoal. Transportation will be provided and is included in the price. Kite tours can be given out on the beautiful Outer Banks. Lesson time starts when we arrive on the island.

Kiting 101 is the trainer kite lesson where you will learn about the wind window, the flying aspects, safety and some simulated board starts. We will teach the proper way to set up an inflatable kite to the safety system and this lesson will also cover launching and landing - sheeting in, sheeting out of the kite to some water relaunch to a self rescue. Time of lessons range from 2- 2.5 hrs.

Water Start is the lesson that moves you from the land to the water. Body dragging with the kite is the first part of the water lesson as we must be able to drag back to our board; this lesson is done with and without the board. Then we work on flying the kite and getting the board on and keeping our body straight. The final part of this lesson is doing some water starts with the board. Time of lessons range from 2-2.5 hrs

Advanced lessons and Kite Tours are customized around the students needs. We can offer Kite tours to the Cape by boat where the group can enjoy long downwinders, but with the comfort of having a chase boat.
